Professional Teaching Staff


Billy Ciejka, General Manager

As a multi-sport college athlete in baseball and tennis, Bill decided to focus on tennis after he helped lead the College of St Rose to the NCAA Division 2 college tournament in 1995.  That year, he played number one doubles and number two singles. Bill has worked as the head tennis professional at Tri-City Fitness for 10 years, and at Wolferts Roost Country Club for 15 years. He currently is the General Manager at Tri-City, and has been the Director of Tennis at numerous country clubs, including Edison Club, Lake George Club, and Wolferts Roost ,Albany Country Club and Shaker Ridge Club.

Bill has helped develop some of the area's top USTA teams including a National Championship team in 2003.  Bill has also worked with many high level collegiate players including Jennifer Daigle (Providence),  Ashley Jordan (St. Michael's), Elizabeth Harris (St. Michael's), Emma DeFrancesco (Holy Cross), and high school standout Carrianna Voellm (Albany Academy).  His specialty is in combining the three main assets of the game (mechanics, strategy, and cardio) in a seamless way in all the lessons he teaches.  His love for the game is contagious, and his enthusiasm for teaching has helped develop a large part of the tennis community in the Capital District.

Andy Schechter, Head Tennis Professional & Director of Junior Programs
Andy has coached hundreds of players at Tri-City Fitness since 2003. Not only is he in charge of junior player development at the Club, he is also the Tournament Director. He runs tournaments of all levels on both the adult and junior circuit, including two Junior National Opens, and has been named Tournament Director of the Year by the USTA Eastern Section.

Gerry Cuva, Director of Tennis
Gerry has been in the tennis industry for over 30 years. He has received a level one teaching certification from the United States Professional Tennis Association. Gerry has served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of the USTA/Eastern Inc. and is the incoming Vice president for 2011-2012. In addition, he has served on several USTA National committees. During his tenure as coach of the Schenectady Electrics his players included Martina Navratilova and Mary Pierce. Currently, as varsity girls and boys coach for Shaker High School, his teams have won over 80 matches in 7 seasons and won several championships. Gerry has competed in many tournaments, being ranked in men's singles, doubles and mixed doubles by the USTA/Eastern Section.

Howard Daley
Howard is a former satellite tour professional. He is originally from Jamaica where he coached and trained at Tennis Jamaica. He worked with the top juniors in the country as the assistant to the nation's Davis Cup Team. Howard works well with players of all ages and levels.
Jeff Hollinger
Jeff is a lifelong tennis player. He played 5 seasons for Averill Park High School and continued at SUNY Geneseo, where he played for another 4 years and graduated with a degree in biology. A multi-sport athlete, Jeff also brings in experience coaching soccer and basketball at various levels. Jeff works well with players of all ages and levels, and believes that every tennis lesson should be informative, aerobic, and fun.

Leo Kane
Voted the 2010 Times Union “Best Tennis Instructor” of the year, Leo has been playing competitively since 1975. He has been working as a instructor at Tri-City Fitness since 1995.  Has won 5 of Capital District Senior Tournaments and has numerous USTA singles and doubles victories. Leo is working with many of the top jr’s in the area and believes in “letting go of the outcomes”  His focus with his students is on the “process” of becoming the best player they can be. He wants all his students to work hard and setting realistic goals. If you would like to schedule a lesson with Leo, please call the club!

Jeff Osborn
Jeff Osborn is a local tennis talent who has an established tennis career. Jeff competed at number one singles and first doubles for SUNY Cobleskill. He led his team to qualify for its first ever NJCAA National Tournament bid for HVCC. In men's open doubles and singles, Jeff owns numerous medals including 4 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze in the NYSP Olymic Games. Jeff has won numerous major local tournaments, including the Albany Mayor's Cup, Abe Poneman Classic, and Central Park Invitational. Jeff recently retired from a 21 year career as a police officer and became an instructor at Tri-City. He is also currently the Head Coach of both the Siena Men's and Women's Tennis teams.  Read more about Jeff

Herb Sweet, Operations Manager
Herb has worked at Tri-City since 2002. Besides working the desk over 30 hours a week, Herb is the director of tennis leagues and special events at the club. He runs many doubles events as well as well as a singles ladder for men. He has monitored over 30,000 singles ladder  matches as well as run over 300 tournaments since 1987.   Read more about Herb

Emma DeFrancesco
Emma played varsity tennis for Bethlehem Central High School for three years. After an undefeated season at sixth singles her first year, she spent her next two seasons in the number one spot. In her last year as a senior captain, she and her fellow teammate Madeline Dering won the Section 2 Championships in doubles and proceeded to play until the second round of the New York State tournament. In the fall she will be attending College of the Holy Cross and will be playing on the women's tennis team.
Kyra Fuleihan
Kyra played on the varsity tennis team at Shaker High School for three years. She started as sixth singles her first year, moving up to third singles and finally second singles. Kyra was co-captain of the varsity team in her senior year and helped lead the team to win the Suburban Council Championship. She was also named the Most Valuable Player in her senior year. Kyra will be attending Fordham University in the Fall.
